Lin Chang-Te (b. 1951, Lucao, Chiayi) studied under painter Wu Mei-Ling during junior high school and later graduated from both the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. A dedicated educator, he taught at several institutions including National Taichung University of Education, Tunghai University, and NTNU, and has exhibited widely in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and Paris. He also served as a juror for major national exhibitions in ink painting and printmaking.
In his artistic process, Lin is meticulous—placing great emphasis on observational sketching, brush technique, and pigment preparation. Spring Swallow is a portrait in modern ink style, based on a graduate student he once advised. The young woman sits on a timeworn leather sofa, her posture, expression, and spirit captured with realism and quiet elegance. According to the inscription in the upper left corner, Lin began with a freehand ink outline (baimiao), then applied ink washes, shading, and detail. The work seamlessly blends Chinese ink traditions with Western perspective and a realist approach, showcasing Lin’s deep sensitivity to both form and inner character.
