Chen Hsing-Wan (1951-2004, Taichung) was the daughter of senior Taiwanese sculptor Chen Hsia-Yu (1917-2000). She graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) and taught at several schools, including Sanzhi Junior High School in New Taipei City, as well as Hsi-Yuan Junior High School and Wuqi Junior High School in Taichung, before leaving her teaching career to focus entirely on artistic creation. Chen studied in the studio of Li Chung-Sheng (1912-1984) and was deeply influenced by him. Her work received recognition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, earning both the New Perspectives Award and the Abstract Painting Award in the museum’s inaugural competition.
Between 1985 and 2004, Chen traveled extensively abroad, seeking to merge abstract expression, automatist techniques, and the spirit of East Asian ink painting. A Dot, one of her representative works from this period, combines ink with fabric and other mixed media. Employing techniques such as pouring, staining, tearing, cutting, stitching, and mounting, she created an abstract composition that appears spontaneous yet carries a rhythmic, musical quality. Dominated by black and white, the work features a deliberately placed red dot that draws the viewer into its structural interplay, while evoking emotions, desires, and imaginative associations.
