Chen Shih-Chu (1930-2007, Dou-nan, Yunlin) studied at Chih-tong Agricultural School in Yunlin, where he was taught by the gouache painter Huang Ou-Po (1917-2003). Later, during his time at the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education), he studied under gouache painter Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008). Chen devoted more than 40 years to teaching while actively pursuing gouache painting. His works were frequently recognized at the Taiyang Fine Arts Exhibition, and he was an active member of the Taiwan Provincial Gouache Painting Association and the Taiyang Fine Arts Association.
Joy depicts two papaya trees thriving under a clear summer sky. Their branches are lush with foliage, and the trees are heavy with fruit. Two black-capped lories perch among the leaves. Chen Shih-Chu pays careful attention to the outlines of each leaf, intentionally directing them toward the viewer. Through the layering of leaves and the glimpses of clustered fruit behind them, the composition conveys a sense of abundance. The leaves and papayas are rendered in vivid shades of green and soft yellow, expressing various stages of ripeness. The lories, like guests dressed in festive attire, add a celebratory touch as they join in the joy of the summer harvest. The work radiates warmth and clarity, capturing the essence of a bright summer day. This piece was selected for the Yunlin County Art Exhibition.
