Gao Yung-Lung (b. 1962, Taichung, Taiwan) holds a Ph.D. in Art from National Taiwan Normal University and currently teaches at National Taichung University of Education. While Gao began his artistic career with ink painting, he later turned to traditional Japanese-style painting (nihonga), developing a deep understanding of its materials and techniques. His works have received awards from the NTNU Art Exhibition, the Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Kaohsiung Fine Arts Exhibition, and he has exhibited in cities such as Taichung, Taipei, Hsinchu, Kaohsiung, Beijing, and Paris.
Completed in 1996, Moon - Xi’an is one of Gao’s early works in nihonga. The painting depicts the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an under moonlight. Layered rooftops, grand towers, a bright moon, and groves scattered between buildings form a composition that is both balanced and evocative. With delicate, precise brushwork, Gao uses richly pigmented mineral colors and generous layers of gold leaf to build varied textures across the surface. The result is a scene of ethereal stillness. Through his choice of subject, layered technique, and luminous materials, Gao reveals a personal style that blends tradition with innovation.
