Chen Yu-Fan (b. 1959) holds a master’s degree in calligraphy from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at National University of Tainan, and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chinese Literature at Tunghai University. He studied calligraphy under masters Chen Chi-Chuan (1917-2003), Tung K’ai-Chang (1909-1998), and Ting Chin-Chuan (1952-). In addition to his long career in early childhood education, Chen is known for his skill in small regular script. He has held solo and group exhibitions at cultural centers in Taichung, Kaohsiung, Yilan, and other cities. His teaching experience also led him to explore corrugated cardboard as both a creative and educational medium, culminating in a solo exhibition of cardboard sculptures.
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter is a cast bronze sculpture based on an original work in corrugated cardboard. The piece faithfully retains the fibrous texture and retro tones of the original material. The undulating core of the cardboard is ingeniously integrated into a geometric framework, combining dense, radiating, and organically scattered patterns. These variations evoke the cyclical transformations found in the rhythm of the four seasons. Corrugated cardboard is a commonplace material, yet Chen once remarked, “Its ruggedness carries a kind of wild beauty, like an ancient myth calling out from the wilderness.” By incorporating his background in calligraphy, he tempers this rawness with delicacy, infusing the piece with subtlety and life.
