Liao Hung-Hsing (b. 1964, Shengang, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts and the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at Chinese Culture University. During his studies, he trained under prominent artists including Ou Hao-Nien (1935-2024), Chiang Chao-Shen (1925-1996), and Wu Hsueh-Jang (1923-2013). Liao specializes in ink painting and calligraphy and has taught at Chaoyang University of Technology. His work has received numerous honors, including the Literary and Artistic Creation Award from the Ministry of Education, the Ink Painting Innovation Award from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and awards from the Taipei City Fine Arts Exhibition. He has held both solo and group exhibitions throughout his career.
Homebound Geese in Moonlight draws upon imagery found in the poetry of Tang dynasty poets Chien Chi (722-780) and Tu Fu (712-770), who often used returning geese to express feelings of homesickness and separation. In this work, Liao Hung-Hsing uses layered ink in varying shades to depict the gently flowing river in the foreground and the undulating mountain ranges in the distance, all under the veil of a misty night. The tranquil and expansive atmosphere evokes a quiet sorrow, as if the sense of longing is gently dispersed into the washes of ink. Through restrained brushwork and subtle tonal shifts, the painting conveys a deep, unspoken yearning for home and remembrance of the past.
