Sun Wen-Pin (b. 1945, Taipei) showed a love for drawing from an early age. He initially worked in design and printing before taking up ceramics at the age of 39. He first studied basic ceramic techniques at Li Liang-I’s (1943-) “Tianmu Studio,” later apprenticing under ceramic artist Tsai Jung-Yo (1944-), and eventually established his own studio in the Wufeng mountain area. His works have earned top honors in the Practical Category of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum’s Ceramics Promotion Exhibition, and he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions.
Sun’s early creations focused on functional ceramic vessels, later expanding to his uniquely shaped Auspicious Beast series. His approach emphasizes smooth, flowing lines, the tactile qualities of the clay body, and the varied effects of glazes on different clay surfaces. This piece, a covered jar, reflects the utilitarian type of his work. The jar’s form is simple and unadorned, with fluid contours that reveal both the slightly porous texture of the clay and the rugged quality of hand-molding. The entire vessel is coated with a copper red glaze, with certain areas developing a mottled effect, giving the work a calm, understated presence and a sense of fullness and solidity.
