Lin Chih-Hsin (b. 1936, Gueiren, Tainan) studied in the Art Teacher Training program at Taiwan Provincial Tainan Normal School (now National University of Tainan), where he trained under Chang Lin-Shu and began making woodcut prints. After graduation he taught elementary-school art and continued printmaking, later expanding into ink painting, Koji pottery, sculpture, glass, and oil painting. Drawing on local life in Taiwan, his style is vivid and direct, with bright color and a warm sense of place. His honors include the Gold Seal Award from the Republic of China Printmaking Society and the Wu San-Lien Award.
This oil-based woodcut, Rocking the Grandchild, depicts the bond between grandparent and child in a traditional home. An elder sit on a bamboo stool with a cane and smiles at a sleeping infant in a bamboo cradle. The blank background keeps the viewer’s focus on their exchange. Clear contour lines and bold color show Lin’s close observation of people and daily life. In the lower left the title “Rocking the Grandchild” is carved, along with a vermilion seal bearing the character “Hsin.” The blank area bears the edition number “18/60,” the bilingual title, and Lin Chih-Hsin’s signature in Chinese and English.
