Lin Pao-Chia (1915-1991, Taichung) was a pivotal figure in Taiwan’s modern ceramics. He pursued advanced studies in ceramics at Kyoto Higher Technical School and the National Ceramic Research Institute in Japan. After returning to Taiwan, he established Meiji Ceramics Studio and Tao Lin Workshop. Lin also served as plant manager at Taiwan Industrial Development Co., and as consultant and instructor for the ceramics division of the Taiwan Provincial Handicraft Research Institute (now the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute). In addition, he taught at Chinese Culture University, Shih Chien College (now Shih Chien University), and the National Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), dedicating himself to the advancement of Taiwan’s ceramics industry and to nurturing future generations. Lin is honored by the TCER (Taiwan Ceramic Society) as the “Father of Modern Taiwanese Ceramics.” His accolades include the Ceramic Art Research Award from the TCER, the National Heritage Award from the Ministry of Education, and the Golden Harvest Award as one of Taichung County’s Top Ten Outstanding Artists.
This vessel features a small, outward-flaring mouth, gently sloping shoulders, and a rounded body. The upper portion resembles the silhouette of a hanging bell, while the body expands gracefully into a broad hemisphere. A single raised circular ridge encircles the belly, which then curves inward toward a footed base. The entire surface is coated with a serene, milky sky-blue glaze. Over this background, Lin applied decorative motifs of flowers, leaves, and geometric patterns in copper red, chrome green, and purple glazes, extending from the shoulders to the belly. These vibrant embellishments lend the piece a lively and playful character.
