Ni Chao-Lung (b. 1940, Taichung) graduated from Taiwan Provincial Taipei Normal School (now National Taipei University of Education) and earned a master’s degree in art education from Hyogo University in Japan. He has taught at various educational levels, from elementary and secondary schools to institutions such as National Taichung University of Education, Asia University, and National Chin-Yi University of Technology. Skilled in both printmaking and oil painting, Ni has received numerous awards, including honors from the Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, the Taiyang Fine Arts Exhibition, the Republic of China International Print Biennial, and the ROC Fine Arts Association’s Golden Eagle Award. A dedicated advocate of art education, he founded the Taichung Association for Art Education and has made significant contributions to Taiwan’s art and cultural development.
In 2009, Ni visited Xiapu in China’s Fujian Province, a coastal region famed for its intertidal landscapes. He initially captured the scenery in sketches and watercolors, later transforming them into prints upon returning to Taiwan. Setting Sail depicts the region’s signature shallow mudflats, crisscrossed with tall bamboo poles. In the foreground stands a large ship, poised for retirement, surrounded by discarded bamboo rafts, driftwood, and scattered stones. The work features a dense network of intersecting lines, showcasing Ni’s refined and decisive carving technique. In the printing process, he deliberately muted the overall color palette to highlight the elegance of linework. Yet he preserved areas of bright white at the ship’s deck, the shallow shoreline, and the tidal border—conveying the distinct beauty of the mudflat landscape and its quiet, evocative atmosphere.
