Huang Li-Shu (b. 1949, Pingtung) graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). She later joined the Taiwan Handicraft Research Institute (now the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute), where she devoted herself to the research, design, and development of Taiwanese crafts, with a particular focus on lacquer art. Following her retirement, Huang continued to teach lacquer techniques at institutions including the Tainan National University of the Arts, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, and the National Center for Traditional Arts, playing an active role in nurturing the next generation of lacquer artisans in Taiwan. Huang studied under master bamboo weaver Huang Tu-Shan (1926-2020) and lacquer artist Chen Huo-Ching (1914-2001). She also pursued advanced training in maki-e and Ryukyuan lacquer relief techniques in Japan, as well as traditional lacquerware methods in China. Her lacquer works have been widely exhibited and awarded in Taiwan, Japan, and beyond. In 2020, she was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a Preserver of Lacquer Craft.
This bowl features a gently rounded mouth and a globular body that tapers smoothly toward the base. The interior is coated with deep reddish-brown lacquer, while the exterior is decorated using the traditional hsi-p’i (rhinoceros-skin lacquer) technique. In this method, a textured surface is first created by brushing lacquer mixed with gray powder back and forth across the vessel to form a subtly raised pattern. Layers of yellow, red, and green lacquer are then successively applied and polished, revealing a brilliant surface with interwoven colors and luminous, marbled patterns. The final effect is one of both elegance and vibrancy, showcasing a masterful balance of texture, sheen, and chromatic complexity.
