Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014, Fengyuan, Taichung) was a student of Yeh Huo-Cheng (1908-1993) and Li Shih-Chiao (1908-1995), and dedicated over four decades to teaching at the elementary and junior high levels. His works earned numerous accolades, including awards from the Provincial Art Exhibition, National Art Exhibition, Educators’ Art Exhibition, and the Chung Hsing Cultural Award for oil painting. A founding member of several central Taiwan art organizations such as the Southeast Art Society and the Huludun Art Research Association, Chang played a vital role in the development of regional art.
Chiba Coast (1990) was painted during an on-site sketching trip to a fishing village in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Using a zigzag composition, Chang captures the energy of an early morning at the harbor. Fishing boats are scattered rhythmically across the port, while diligent fishermen prepare to set sail for a day of work.
Executed with bold, rhythmic brushstrokes, the painting is infused with a vibrant palette. Bright yellows and oranges dominate the scene, offset by vivid purples and accented with luminous whites. The striking contrasts and energetic composition convey the brisk and hopeful atmosphere of a coastal morning.
