Hsieh Tung-Liang (b. 1949, Wufeng, Taichung) studied drawing under Ho Jui-Hsiung (1933-) in his early years and later graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). Hsieh received numerous accolades, including awards from the Taiyang Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Taipei City Art Exhibition. He became the first sculptor in Taiwan to earn lifetime exemption from review at the Provincial Art Exhibition. He has taught at Tunghai University and what is now National Taichung University of Education, and remains a leading figure in the development of sculpture in central Taiwan.
Confidence and Disappointment is part of Hsieh Tung-Liang’s “Style” series and consists of two matching pieces that explore the emotions of self-assurance and discouragement. Each columnar sculpture features a human figure carved in shallow relief on different sides, each embodying a distinct emotional state. The man resting his chin on his hand conveys a sense of confidence, though his pensive pose hints at an uncertain future. The woman, though downcast with her head lowered and face hidden in her palm, continues to stride forward despite her disappointment. Together, the two works echo and extend one another, inviting reflection on the complex interplay between these contrasting yet connected emotional experiences.
