Shen Tung-Ning (b. 1958, Hsinchu) graduated from the Department of Arts and Crafts at Taiwan Provincial Hsinchu Teachers College (now National Tsing Hua University). He studied ceramics under Chiu Huan-Tang (1932-). After resigning from his teaching post in 1986, Shen devoted himself fully to ceramic art. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and received multiple awards at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of History, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and Yingge Ceramics Museum.
This work takes the form of an arched cube, resembling a curved roof tile. At the center of the top surface is a circular opening with openwork decoration, inspired by the curling motifs found in traditional Chinese window grilles. The surface is treated with slip to depict layered mountain scenery, echoing the window motif above. By presenting both the window and the view beyond on the same visual plane, Shen disrupts conventional spatial logic and instead constructs a landscape of the mind.
This piece is part of Shen’s series created with Miaoli clay and coarse grog. The surface features natural pores that highlight the rustic texture of the material. The work received the Collection Award at the 1996 Taiwan Ceramics Exhibition.
