Liao specializes in ink painting and calligraphy and has taught at Chaoyang University of Technology. His work has received numerous honors, including the Literary and Artistic Creation Award from the Ministry of Education, the Ink Painting Innovation Award from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and awards from the Taipei City Fine Arts Exhibition. It Is Real presents a surreal scene rendered in traditional ink painting techniques. At the center of a dark, cosmic void floats a large fish with piercing eyes. Beneath it lies a barren, spherical planet. On its surface, six human figures, either standing or sitting, are arranged in two neat rows as if posing for a family portrait. The planet’s cracked and mottled surface is delicately detailed using fine brushwork in black ink. Similarly, the fish’s scales and fins, along with the figures’ facial features and clothing, are carefully depicted. Through variations in ink tone and brush moisture, the artist creates subtle contrasts of light and shadow, adding volume and dimensionality. The result is a surreal yet familiar atmosphere, combining traditional brushwork with unexpected imagery and offering a distinctive interpretation of contemporary ink art.
