Lo Hsiu-Hsiung (1935-2008, Taichung ) was graduated from the Department of Business Administration at Feng Chia University. While working at Chang Hwa Bank, he devoted his spare time to painting, achieving remarkable artistic success. His works earned awards at the Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, National Fine Arts Exhibition, and the IFA International Art Exhibition in Japan. Passionate about promoting local art and culture, Lo founded the Spring-Autumn Painting Society and was an active member of the Central Taiwan Watercolor Painting Society and the Chuang Chi Painting Society.
The title Green Mountains comes from a popular 1949 song featured in the film Storm over Alishan, whose lyrics portray the scenery of Alishan and the lives of its Indigenous people. This work depicts five women in traditional Indigenous attire, posed either standing or seated to form a stable compositional structure, with towering mountains and deep valleys in the background lending a sense of distance. Using a meticulous realist technique, Lo balanced red and green contrasts with earthy tones to capture the women’s facial expressions, the intricate designs and colors of their clothing, and the various vessels around them, such as clay pots, rattan baskets, and bamboo containers. On the right, one woman holds a lily, and behind her stands a well-behaved yellow dog, together evoking the simple yet vibrant life of an Indigenous village. The composition is tight and precise, with rich colors creating a soft and graceful atmosphere. In 1983, the piece received an Honorable Mention at the 10th National Fine Arts Exhibition.
