Liu Kuo-Tung (1926-2020, Hsinshe, Taichung) graduated from Taiwan Provincial Fengyuan Commercial and Industrial School and spent over forty years as an art educator. Introduced by his close friend Chang Ping-Nan (1924-2014), Liu studied under Yeh Huo-Cheng (1908-1993) and Li Shih-Chiao (1908-1995), two major figures in Taiwanese modern art. His works received accolades from the Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Teachers' Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Pacific Art Exhibition in Japan. He actively participated in several art organizations, including the Central Taiwan Art Association, the Huludun Art Research Society, and the Southeast Asia Art Association.
Liu Kuo-Tung is known for his refined brushwork, vivid colors, and harmonious palettes that capture the quiet, peaceful spirit of nature. In Coastline, he uses delicate strokes and layered tones to depict swirling seawater moving around coastal rocks in the foreground, gradually merging with the distant sea and sky. With thick yet gentle applications of oil paint, Liu evokes the calm serenity of the shoreline. The subtle interplay of light and shadow across the rocks and water reveals his masterful grasp of natural light, and his ability to express atmosphere through color and tone.
