Wang Hsiu-Chi (b. 1950, Taipei) graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). She has served as a faculty member at Tamkang University and as an artist-in-residence at MingDao University. Her works have received numerous accolades, including awards from the Provincial Art Exhibition, National Art Exhibition, and the Zhongshan Cultural and Arts Award. She holds permanent exemption from jury review at the Provincial Art Exhibition, and has served as a juror for major art competitions such as the Kaohsiung Fine Arts Exhibition and the Zhongshan Award. Wang is an active member of the Chinese Cultural and Creative Society and the Taiwan Sculpture Society.
Wang’s sculptures, primarily in stone, explore themes of humanity and nature. Having grown up in a farming family, she feels a deep connection to stone—a material she finds both familiar and beloved. She skillfully adapts her creative vision to the natural characteristics of each stone, achieving harmony between form and meaning.
Serenity is carved from richly textured aurora stone. The work delicately portrays a baby lying on its side, smiling peacefully. The child’s rounded cheeks and limbs convey a sense of vitality and innocence. For Wang, this tender smile is the heart of the piece—a symbol of pure joy and untroubled repose. The sculpture’s gentle curves and lifelike warmth embody the artist’s enduring commitment to expressing serenity through natural materials and human form.
