Lin Tai-Ping (b. 1939, Xiushui, Changhua) graduated from Taiwan Provincial Taichung Teachers College (now National Taichung University of Education) and the Department of Science Education at National Changhua University of Education. He later completed coursework in fine arts at National Taiwan Normal University. A dedicated educator, Lin taught art, biology, and science at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels, and served as an arts curriculum advisor for the Provincial Department of Education and Taichung County. His paintings have received numerous awards, including recognition from the Provincial Public Servants' Art Exhibition, National Art Exhibition, National Oil Painting Exhibition, Taiyang Fine Arts Exhibition, Taipei Fine Arts Exhibition, and Kaohsiung Fine Arts Exhibition. He has also actively participated in several regional art associations, including the Taichung County Fine Arts Association, the Huludun Fine Arts Research Society, and the Central Taiwan Fine Arts Association.
In 1991, Lin visited key schools in Shanghai, Nanjing, and the northeastern provinces as part of an educational exchange. During this trip, he was struck by the sight of Shanghai residents gathering and selling miscellaneous goods on the streets to support their families. He took a series of photographs documenting these scenes and later reassembled the imagery into the oil painting Shanghai Street Market. The painting depicts a bustling marketplace where people in simple blue and ochre-colored clothing gather around street stalls selling various items. The scene vividly conveys the atmosphere of a specific place and historical moment, rich in local color and social texture. Lin employs fluid brushwork and bright tonal contrasts, using one-point perspective to meticulously organize the composition. Despite the visual complexity of the marketplace, the careful spatial arrangement creates a clear and coherent structure, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the lively street scene.
