Lin Shan-Ying (b. 1951, Miaoli) developed an early passion for art with the encouragement of her father, and later studied under ceramicist Tsai Jung-Yo (1944-). Travel has played a key role in shaping her artistic voice, offering space for reflection and inspiration. Lin has held numerous solo and group exhibitions, and is best known for her large-scale ceramic works. Using glaze as oil paint and clay as canvas, she makes bold, expressive works across themes such as jars, urns, figures, floral motifs, and animal forms, defined by dynamic shapes and thick, flowing glazes.
This piece features a powerful form with a thick rim, broad shoulders, and round body. Its twin shoulders project outward like short wings, connecting fluidly to the curved belly below. Lin likens the vessel to a woman: a strong mouth, defined shoulders, a rounded chest, and a crimson gown. The sturdy upper section evokes mountains and rivers, embodying the nurturing presence of Mother Earth. After 40 hours of high-temperature firing, the surface emerges in vibrant crimson glaze that flows like molten lava, merging with deep violet tones below. The natural variations in color are spontaneous and moving, an eloquent testament to the transformative power of fire.
