Temporal Narrative - Ritual: Monument takes the form of a memorial, honoring events, beings, or moments of significance while also serving as an elegy through the notion of “ritual.” At the center stands the monument itself, composed of the bodies of animals—an eagle, deer, snake, and raccoon—arranged as symbolic offerings. Around them, the corpses of birds marked with numbers form a symmetrical pair of vertical arrangements reminiscent of traditional Chinese couplets. Some bird forms are fully depicted, while others fade into abstraction, symbolizing the passage of time and the gradual erasure of existence. The couplet-like layout implies that these animals’ deaths do not warrant eulogy or celebration. The imagery was created through a layered process: the animal forms were first rendered in ink on separate sheets of paper, then collaged onto black cardstock. This integration of traditional ink techniques with contemporary assemblage expands the expressive potential of modern ink painting, bridging commemoration with critique, and stillness with the relentless flow of time.
