Hsueh Pao-Hsia (b. 1956, Taichung) entered the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University in 1975. After graduating, she pursued further studies in the United States, earning a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute and a Ph.D. in Art from New York University. Upon returning to Taiwan, she joined the faculty of Tainan National University of the Arts. From 2006 to 2009, she served as Director of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Her numerous honors include inclusion in the 2009 Who's Who in Asia-Pacific and the 2016 Ministry of Education Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education.
Hsueh’s large-scale works have evolved over time. During her years in the U.S., she often incorporated three-dimensional found objects into her compositions. After returning to Taiwan, her practice shifted toward abstract painting, using layers of pigment to cover the entire canvas surface. She then manipulates these layers with brushes and palette knives to create richly textured, multi-dimensional surfaces. In Tendency, high-chroma pigments are used to produce stark visual contrasts. The unstructured paint application, directed by the motion of the hand and the flow of brushstrokes, generates a surface full of kinetic tension and tactile complexity. The resulting structure is both fluid and layered, revealing the passage of time through overlapping pigments. Set within a narrow, elongated format, the painting surrounds the viewer with radiant color fields, evoking a sense of immersion and impact—hallmarks of Hsueh’s compelling visual language.
