Chi Tsung-Jen (b. 1943, Qingshui, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). He taught at Juren Junior High School in Taichung for over 30 years. In his early career, he worked primarily with batik and watercolor, actively promoting batik painting through a long-running column in Artist magazine. He later turned his focus to oil painting. Chi has held numerous solo exhibitions and received awards both in Taiwan and abroad. In recent years, his work has often explored social and environmental issues.
Forest Story is an early batik painting by Chi that combines elements in a surreal yet structured composition: a portrait in the foreground, a flower vase, butterflies, and tree trunks in the middle ground, and distant mountains and blossoms in the background. This layering highlights his distinctive narrative imagination and artistic style.
Chi uses bold red outlines to define the portrait, tree trunks, floral motifs, and mountain forms, filling them in with varying shades of red, black, and brown. The horizontal red and yellow patches in the foreground resemble a riverside in traditional landscape painting, helping to define the depth of space. The vivid, decisive palette reveals the artist’s signature style.
