Ink Painting

Lo Chen-Hsien (b. 1946, Yunlin) earned his degree in Fine Arts from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now the National Taiwan University of Arts) and later received his Master of Fine Arts from Fontbonne University in the United States. He taught at Chang Jung Christian University and the National Taiwan University of Arts, where he also served as Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Director of the university’s art museum. During his student years, he studied under Fu Juan-Fu (1910-2007), whose influence sparked Lo’s lifelong devotion to landscape sketching. After returning from the U.S., he infused Western aesthetics into his approach, developing a distinctive visual language rooted in his “traveling landscapes.” His work has earned top prizes at the National Art Exhibition, the Sun Yat-sen Literary and Art Award, and the National Award for Arts.
A frequent sketcher of the Central Mountain Range, Lo is known for creating poetic moods through variations in mountain mist and atmosphere. Misty Green Hills features a V-shaped composition, capturing a village nestled in a mountain valley from a high vantage point. Dense trees frame both sides of the image, while mist fills the sunken central valley, partially veiling the village homes, bridges, and streams within. Lo uses rich ink washes to portray groves of trees, with mist weaving between them to create dynamic contrasts of fullness and void. In the distance, softly brushed mountains add a sense of layered depth, pulling the viewer’s gaze gently into the painting’s recesses.
