Liao Pen-Sheng (b. 1959, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). After graduation, he taught at both the high school and elementary levels while continuing his artistic practice. His works have received awards from the National Art Exhibition, Provincial Art Exhibition, Taiyang Art Exhibition, Dadun Art Exhibition, Nanying Art Exhibition, and the IFA International Art Exhibition in Japan. He has served as a juror for the Nanying Award and the Dadun Art Exhibition, and was the founder of the Original Painting Society. He has also been active in the Central Taiwan Fine Arts Association and the Taichung Fine Arts Association.
East Spirit, Western Form is part of Liao's series of the same name. The work merges Western formal structures with Eastern motifs—landscapes, totems, and spatial elements—in a bid to move beyond Western-dominated paradigms and delve into the roots of the artist’s own spiritual and cultural identity. In this piece, a striking contrast is established between red and white zones, while decorative imagery such as mountains, waves, and blossoms are rendered using traditional ink-painting techniques. Through the deliberate interplay of point, line, plane, color, and form, Liao reinterprets the foundations of Eastern painting, opening a pathway for new perspectives in contemporary art.
