Huang Hai-Yun (b. 1943, Chengdu, Sichuan) earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from National Taiwan University and an MFA from California State University, Fullerton. Huang taught at Tunghai University, where he also served as chair of the Department of Fine Arts and later as dean of the College of Liberal Arts. His work has been exhibited in the Taipei Fine Arts Museum’s Taipei Biennial and supported by the Government Information Office for significant academic publications. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and Malaysia.
Huang’s art expresses the trajectory of the soul, often fusing Eastern and Western aesthetics. Navigating the space between realism and abstraction, his works possess a fantastical and romantic quality. Stardust in the Blue Realm depicts a pair of golden wings unfolding and soaring amid a sea of deep blue stardust. Through a blend of figurative and abstract forms, the work reveals Huang’s longing for the unknown, for a mysterious cosmos beyond reach. The wings serve as a metaphor for spiritual ascent and cosmic exploration. With confident yet precise brushwork and vivid yet gentle color, Huang articulates an imaginative visual language imbued with personal consciousness—bordering on the mythic.
