Chen Yin-Hui (1931-2024, Lucao, Chiayi) studied under art teachers Shih Te-Ching (1923-1981) and Wu Hsueh-Jang (1923-2013) while attending Chiayi Senior High School. In 1950, he entered the Department of Fine Arts at Taiwan Provincial Normal College (now the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan Normal University), studying with Liao Chi-Chun (1902-1976) and also receiving guidance from Lin Yu-Shan (1907-2004) and Yang San-Lang (1907-1995). After graduating, he taught briefly at Beigang Junior High School and other institutions before returning to National Taiwan Normal University as a teaching assistant, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. In 2007, he was appointed Honorary Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the same university. His works were frequently selected for the Tai-Yang Art Exhibition and the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and he held solo and group exhibitions in Taiwan, Tokyo, Seoul, and Saudi Arabia.
Painted in 2002, Plum Blossoms Blooming Along the Path belongs to Chen’s series of floral-themed works in which the forms approach abstraction. In this composition, he abandons representational depiction, reducing the plum blossoms to white points, lines, and planes, creating a spontaneous and minimal yet emotionally resonant image. High-chroma blue serves as the backdrop for the white blossoms, producing a striking contrast that infuses the work with rhythmic energy and poetic charm. The painting invites the viewer into an imagined stroll along a path lined with blooming plum trees, evoking the quiet pleasure of being surrounded by their subtle fragrance.
