Kang Li-Ying (b. 1968, Kaohsiung) graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. She later studied metalsmithing and jewelry at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Austria, and went on to earn a master’s degree in Jewelry and Metalwork from the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts, where she now teaches in the Department of Material Arts and Design. Kang also teaches and demonstrates at the Metalworking Studio of the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute. Her works have received awards including the Best Form Award in the Taiwan Crafts Research Institute’s Life Product Design Competition, and selection in the TAIWAN Collection metalwork image competition.
Ovoviviparity and the Blind Document consists of five objects. Three are semi-elliptical metal forms, similar in outer shape but with subtly different convex and concave interiors. Arranged in sequence, they suggest a process of spatial reduction, referencing relational memory and emotional distance. These objects serve as conduits to past connections. The remaining two pieces, a double tipped white calligraphy brush and an eyedropper, serve as metaphors for nourishment, as if feeding life into the egg shaped forms. Beneath the objects lies a textual plane: a “blind document” composed of Bible verses with all punctuation removed, rendering the sacred words unreadable, almost otherworldly. This backdrop becomes an altar of sorts, upon which a ritual of life, transformation, and metaphorical alchemy begins. Kang’s work engages with the language of materials and ritual objects to explore themes of origin, memory, and meaning-making in silence.
