Tseng Te-Piao (1942-2020, Changhua) studied at the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education), where he was mentored by noted artists Lu Fo-Ting (1911-2005) and Cheng Shan-Hsi (b. 1932), and also studied under Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008). After graduation, he worked as a teacher while continuing to create nihonga (traditional Japanese-style paintings). His works won awards at the Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, and Taiyang Art Exhibition. A member of the Taiyang Fine Arts Association, Central Taiwan Art Association, and Taiwan Nihonga Association, Tseng authored The Art of Nihonga: Introduction and Creation and A Historical Study of Nihonga in Taiwan, making significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of the art form in Taiwan.
Autumn Stream at Aowanda depicts the Aowanda valley in Ren’ai Township, Nantou, where autumn mists rise and the forest is ablaze with a myriad of colors. This work is a representative example of Tseng’s decades of study in nihonga. Dominated by a yellow palette and accented with orange, vermilion, and yellow-green, the painting captures the seasonal transformation of the mountain forest. Tseng replaced linear drawing with areas of color applied using suihi pigments and mineral colors, introducing light, shadow, and spatial depth. By lowering the color saturation, he enhanced the sense of depth and chiaroscuro. The use of a composition that contrasts large forms in the foreground with smaller ones in the background adds richness, variety, and rhythm to the scene.
