The Great Migration, painted in 2008, is a representative piece from Chuang’s Ancient Civilization series. Inspired by archaeological discoveries in Mongolia—particularly its rich deposits of dinosaur fossils—Chuang was stirred by a deep sense of historical imagination. Employing his signature compositional method of spatial juxtaposition, he brings together imagery from disparate eras: the skeletal remains of dinosaurs are reimagined galloping across the vast grasslands of the Mongolian Gobi Desert. The painting is dominated by hues of yellow and green. Through the careful arrangement of light, shadow, and textured color blocks, Chuang creates a layered visual field imbued with a strong sense of time and memory. The dinosaurs appear to move through a temporal dimension, enacting a “great migration” that transcends geological epochs—a poetic convergence of past and present across space and time.
