Li Chen (b. 1963, Yunlin) was trained in traditional folk crafts before studying Western sculpture techniques. He is known for fusing classical Chinese aesthetics with contemporary sculptural language, resulting in a unique visual style that bridges East and West. Since his international debut in 1999, Li has held major solo exhibitions in Taipei, Beijing, Singapore, Seattle, and Paris. In 2007, he represented Taiwan at the Venice Biennale with a solo presentation—an achievement that cemented his status as one of the most influential sculptors in the global contemporary art scene.
The World-Honored One 8/8, part of Li’s renowned Energy in Emptiness series, depicts a youthful and serene image of the Buddha Shakyamuni. With its smooth, full contours and simplified lines, the sculpture radiates a calm and majestic presence. Its polished black surface seems opaque at first, yet shifting light and shadow suggest energy held in check, as if a hidden spiritual power lies within. The interplay between solid form and ephemeral light evokes the Buddhist concept of emptiness filled with potential. This piece was exhibited at the 2007 Venice Biennale.
