Chang Yeh (b. 1967, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Commercial Design at National Taichung University of Science and Technology and earned a master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at Taichung University of Education. Chang specializes in sculpture, and his works have received awards at the Provincial Art Exhibition, Taipei County Art Exhibition, Nanying Art Exhibition, and the National Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. He has also participated in numerous public art and landscape sculpture projects in Taiwan and served as both director and secretary-general of the Central Taiwan Sculpture Association.
Plucking Youthful Strings is a play on words: “挑” (tiāo) refers to both “plucking strings” and “carrying with poise,” while “荳” (dòu) symbolizes the budding emotions of a young girl’s first love. In this piece, Chang uses figurative sculpture to express an abstract concept. The girl stands with her right hand holding a violin and her left hand reaching upward, one foot stepping forward in a lively pose. The sculpture captures the youthful energy and exuberance of adolescence. To heighten the sense of movement, Chang adopted the challenging technique of constructing the sculpture and pedestal separately, a breakthrough that helped further shape his distinctive style.
