Chang Tsang-Sung (b. 1954, Houli, Taichung) graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1985. After returning to Taiwan, he worked as a photojournalist for Our magazine. In 1991, he began contributing a series of reports to Crown magazine, which were later compiled into his first book There Is Love Among Us. He has since published several titles, including Memories of Monga (1997), World in a Cocoon (2002), Tenderness—Collective Memories of 921 Families in Taiwan (2002), Eternal Tremor (2004), and Liberation from Hell: Stories of Those Who Pursue Truth (2006). In 2006, he received the 29th Wu San-Lien Award for photography.
Both a photographer and writer, Chang approaches his work with deep humanistic concern, using image and text to document life and express an ideal vision of humanity. After the devastating 921 Earthquake struck central Taiwan in 1999, he traveled to the affected areas immediately to record the aftermath. In the years that followed, he visited and photographed 50 families. Between 2003 and 2004, he revisited 37 of those families to take updated portraits, using the changes in family composition to reflect the passage of time—both its constancy and impermanence. This pair of black-and-white photographs shows a family whose members remain intact, but the children once cradled in their arms have grown up. The work quietly yet powerfully captures the resilience of life and the courage to face the future after disaster.
