Chen Sung (b. 1945, Shalu, Taichung) studied at Taiwan Provincial Hsinchu Teachers College (now National Tsing Hua University), where he was trained by renowned watercolorist Lee Tze-Fan (1907-1989). He later enrolled in the sculpture program at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), studying under the prominent sculptor Chiu Yun (1912-2009). Chen’s work has received recognition from the Taiyang Fine Arts Exhibition, the Kun Island Art Exhibition, and the Taichung County Teachers’ Exhibition. In addition to his practice, he has actively promoted sculpture in Taiwan by organizing stone carving workshops, founding a sculpture studio, and co-founding the Taichung City Sculpture Society.
Chen is known for working with native Taiwanese stone, using sculpture to reflect the island’s stories and collective memory. Sister Blossoms is carved from mixed stone and portrays a pair of sisters. The elder sister—taller, with braided hair—wears a jacket and short skirt, her hands tucked calmly into her pockets, exuding a quiet warmth. The younger sister, shorter with cropped hair and blunt bangs, peeks out playfully, her face full of charm and vitality. Chen captures not only the distinct features of each sister but also their personalities. Their gently leaning postures convey a deep familial bond, embodying the tenderness and affection shared between siblings.
