Lee Hui-Cheng (b. 1941, Nantun, Taichung) holds a BFA from National Taiwan Normal University and a master’s degree from Daito Bunka University in Japan. His teachers included notable artists such as Lu Fu-Ting (1911-2005), Lee Chung-Sheng (1912-1984), Huang Chun-Pi (1898-1991), and Lin Yu-Shan (1907-2004). He taught at several institutions, including National Hsinchu Teachers College (now National Tsing Hua University), National Taichung Teachers College (now National Taichung University of Education), and Tunghai University. Lee specializes in ink painting and calligraphy, and also taught Chinese art history. His integration of theory and practice continually enriches his creative vision, and he remains an active artist after retirement.
Encounter is a representative example of Lee’s use of dense ink in landscape painting. It captures misty waters winding through layers of mountains, where two small boats drift across the river, accompanied by birds in flight. The composition is weighted on the left, with towering mountains rendered in heavy ink, while the right side features smaller, lighter peaks. The river between them is defined through negative space, creating strong contrast. Using saturated brushwork, Lee applies techniques such as layered washes, broad strokes, and dry-brush texture to express the grandeur of the mountains. Fine lines outline ridges and add figures for scale and rhythm. His command of ink is both bold and subtle, offering a serene yet expansive sense of space and time.
