Wu Chien-I (b. 1987, Taichung) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts and earned a master’s degree in Plastic Arts from Tainan National University of the Arts. In 2016, she was selected for the Ministry of Culture’s “MIT—Made in Taiwan: Emerging Artists” program. Wu’s signature medium is decorative tape, which she layers and collages into vivid, personal visual narratives. Her works have received numerous accolades, including the Kaohsiung Award, the National Art Exhibition, and the Taipei Arts Award. In recent years, she has also taken part in experimental cross-disciplinary exhibitions and residency workshops both in Taiwan and abroad.
In her 2019 solo exhibition Poetic Moments, Wu presented works from her Ruins and Lost Sites series. These pieces use washi tape collage to reflect on the cultural and historical memory of specific places. The Lost Sites series centers on the 2018 fire at Yuanli Market in Taichung, a place deeply tied to Wu’s childhood memories. Returning to the site after the fire left her profoundly moved, inspiring her to create window-like compositions with tilted, inward-looking perspectives—raising questions about the meaning of “heritage” in contemporary contexts. Also part of Poetic Moments is the Burned Heritage series, a group of small-format, double-sided installations. One side depicts the market’s original architectural features using washi tape; the other shows the same forms reimagined as cast cake molds. These playful yet poignant contrasts between historical reality and consumer culture invite viewers to reflect on how memory, loss, and preservation shape their emotional connection to place.
