Chen Hsuan-Ming (b. 1942, Tianzhong, Changhua) studied at Taichung Teachers College (now National Taichung University of Education), where he was mentored by the painter Lu Fo-Ting (1911-2005) and calligrapher Chen Chi-Chuan (1917-2003). During graduate studies at the National Taiwan Normal University’s Institute of Fine Arts, he further trained in seal carving under Wang Pei-Yueh (1926-2006). Chen is widely recognized for his excellence in calligraphy, particularly in clerical and semi-cursive scripts. His work has received numerous awards at provincial exhibitions, teachers’ exhibitions, and Central Taiwan art shows. Since 1995, he has served as a juror for the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and the Dadun Fine Arts Exhibition. He is also an active member of several major art organizations, including the Chinese Calligraphy Society, Chinese Hungdao Calligraphy Association, Taichung Calligraphy Society, and the National Style Painting and Calligraphy Association.
This piece is a couplet in Clerical Script. The brushstrokes are vigorous and powerful, with a balanced use of square and rounded strokes. The initial strokes are angular and defined, while the main strokes are full and fluid, often ending with subtle waves or dry-brush effects, lending a dynamic elegance to the work. The character forms are upright and well-spaced, with rhythm and structure. The style merges characteristics of both Han and Northern stele inscriptions. The Clerical Script here is infused with the spirit of Seal Script, and the slanting strokes recall the structure of Regular Script, resulting in a composition that feels both ancient and graceful.
Transcription: “On stone, listening to pines, to release the crane; Before cliffs, visiting friends, often bringing a zither.” Inscription: “In late mid-spring of the guisi year (2013), written while residing at Wenhua Guan Di. Chen Hsuan-Ming.” Four seals are stamped: “Creating realms, expressing the heart”, “Quiet joy”, “Seal of Chen Hsuan-Ming”, and “Calligraphy with hidden jade.”
