Tsai Jung-Yu (b. 1944, Wufeng, Taichung) trained in drawing under painter Hou Shou-Feng (1938-) during his early years, laying a solid foundation in sketching. In 1976, inspired by Yang Lien-Ko (dates unknown), he began exploring ceramics and later studied under renowned ceramists Chiu Huan-Tang (1932-) and Lin Pao-Chia (1915-1991). After returning to his hometown, he established Guangda Art Studio. Tsai has been selected for many domestic and international exhibitions, served as chairman of the Taiwan Ceramic Society, and received the National Craft Achievement Award and the New Taipei City Ceramic Art Achievement Award in 2011.
This work is part of Tsai Jung-Yu’s Inclusion series. Since 2003, Tsai has been inspired by his friend Lin Chin-Chung (1957-) and his mentor Chiu Huan-Tang. After seven years of experimentation, he began combining two different materials to allow thick glazes to flow naturally during firing, creating layered glazes that envelop the clay body. The result conveys both strength and softness, a sense of mutual inclusion. This particular piece is a wheel-thrown ceramic bottle. Around the mouth and neck, low-fired clay and glaze have flowed together, forming natural marbling patterns reminiscent of stone or tree rings. These flowing textures stand in contrast to the simple reddish body made of Miaoli clay at the neck and base, creating a rich visual interplay.
