Li I-Hung (1941-2023, Hsi-Kang, Tainan) had the given name Tsai-Chuan. He graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) and later taught at schools including Keelung Municipal Fourth Junior High School (now Keelung Municipal Jhongshan Senior High School), Keelung Municipal Da-Te Junior High School, and the National Institute of the Arts (now Taipei National University of the Arts). His honors include the Sun Yat-sen Literary and Art Award and the Wu San-Lien Literary and Art Award, and in 2017 he was conferred an honorary doctorate by Taipei National University of the Arts. Li studied under painter and calligrapher Chiang Chao-Shen (1925-1996), whose artistic style and outlook on life had a profound influence on him. Passionate about photography, music, and travel, Li often drew inspiration from these pursuits, using them as a means to explore new possibilities in brushwork, composition, and materials. Deeply rooted in traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, he was equally committed to innovation and creative exploration.
Landscape depicts a serene natural scene, with a flowing stream and dense mist dividing the composition into foreground and background. In the foreground, lush grasses and trees frame red-tiled houses partly hidden among the foliage. In the background, towering mountains rise in continuous succession. On the left bank of the river, rocky cliffs are overgrown with vegetation, with scattered stones lying along the shore. The right bank forms a gently sloping sandbar dotted with reeds. Executed primarily in black, green, and ochre, the painting employs predominantly wet brushwork to evoke a soft, humid atmosphere, while the textures of the mountains and rocks are rendered with dry brushstrokes to convey their rugged forms and coarse surfaces.
