Su Shih-Hsiung (1935-2023), born in Tainan, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. He began his artistic journey in two-dimensional painting before turning to ceramics. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese carved lacquer techniques, Su pioneered his own multi-layered, multi-colored “carved-glaze” method. His works have received major awards including the Ho-Cheng Golden Ceramics Award, the National Folk Craft Award, and international recognition at the Fletcher Challenge Ceramic Awards in New Zealand. In 2000, he was honored as a Senior Cultural Figure by the Council for Cultural Affairs, and in 2010, he received the National Craft Achievement Award from the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute.
This round-bodied, short-necked vase is a representative work of Su’s carved-glaze technique. Following a planned design, he applied multiple layers of glaze in different colors to the ceramic surface. After firing, the glaze layers were carved and polished using various tools to reveal the intended patterns, followed by a second round of firing. The complex process demands deep expertise in glaze chemistry and kiln behavior. The finished piece features a harmonious palette of green and brown tones. Its surface is densely covered with overlapping leaf motifs, their veins crisp and distinct, with richly variegated hues that shimmer across the surface. The result is a mysterious, dreamlike aesthetic that exemplifies Su’s unique and irreplaceable artistic language.
