Chang Yao-Hsi (1925-2013, Daya, Taichung) began studying oil painting under the mentorship of Lee Shih-Chiao (1908-1995), and later graduated from the Kawabata Painting School in Tokyo and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University. Chang taught at Hsin-Min Vocational and Commercial High School (now Hsin-Min Senior High School in Taichung). His works were frequently selected for the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition beginning in 1946, and he later received honors at the All-Province Teachers Exhibition, I.F.A. International Exhibition, Japan’s Nisshun Art Exhibition, and Taichung County Art Exhibition. He was an active member of the Central Taiwan Art Association, Southeast Painting Society, Hulu Dun Art Society, and the Oil Painting Society of the Republic of China.
Painted in his signature style, Boating captures a tranquil scene of leisurely boat rides on a sun-dappled lake. Beneath dense tree cover, the water glistens in shimmering tones. Two rowboats drift gently on the lake, each carrying a pair of passengers. On the far shore, several other boats are docked. Dominated by blue and green, the painting uses short, thick brushstrokes to build layered oil pigment, recalling pointillism and Impressionist influence. This method creates a rhythmic, flowing visual effect, delicately balancing motion and stillness. Rich in texture and lyrical in mood, the work evokes a poetic reflection on leisure and serenity, where movement and quiet coexist in visual harmony.
