Huang Teng-Tang (1928-2013, Nantou City) graduated in 1949 from the Fine Arts Division of Taichung Normal School. A student of Lin Chih-Chu during the early development of Eastern gouache painting in Taiwan, Huang was frequently selected for the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and was honored in 1997 as a distinguished senior artist in Taichung. In addition to works featuring birds and landscapes, Huang also created paintings that focused on scenes from Taiwan’s natural environment. He often employed modern compositional strategies, using flattened shapes and defined color blocks to construct his landscapes.
Mountain Stream and Waterfall captures the cascading flow of a mountain stream, where a natural drop in elevation forms a waterfall—an image commonly found in Taiwan’s terrain. Large boulders flank the stream, rendered in layered tones of blue and gray through subtle modulations of mineral pigment. The artist’s signature and seal appear in the lower right corner, applied in keeping with Eastern gouache conventions.
