Wang Hsiu-Kung (1929-2019, Gansu, China) studied at the National Hangzhou Academy of Art before relocating to Taiwan in 1949. He taught at several institutions, including Xizhi High School, Tainan Agricultural School, and Gangshan High School, and also worked in advertising design. In 1957, he became the director of the China Arts and Ceramics Company, marking the beginning of his involvement in Taiwan’s ceramic industry. He later served as director of the Chung-Hua Arts and Ceramics Company and founded both Longmen Ceramics and Tang Kiln Ceramics. Wang also held a part-time teaching position at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). From 1980 onward, he focused on his own ceramic creations. His work received several honors, including the Excellence Award in Non-Functional Ceramics and Honorable Mention in Functional Ceramics from the Taipei Fine Arts Museum’s Modern Ceramics Exhibition. He held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Taiwan and abroad. Wang was the first to invite artists to collaborate in ceramic design and decoration, and he pioneered the “high-fired polychrome glaze” technique, making significant contributions to Taiwan’s ceramic art. In 2015, he received the second New Taipei City Ceramic Achievement Award.
This vessel features a flared mouth, long neck, angled shoulders, and a tall cylindrical body. Its form is upright and elegant. The surface is glazed in a gradient of brown tones, transitioning from light to dark, with a touch of luminous white near the base. These colors reflect off one another, conveying a restrained and composed character. Parallel vertical incisions are carved into the shoulder and body, further emphasizing the vessel’s slender proportions. The modern shape and richly colored glaze exemplify the artist’s refined craftsmanship and distinctive style. The work reflects Wang Hsiu-Kung’s dedication to repeated experimentation and technical mastery, developed through years of practice in ceramic innovation.
