Cheng Tai-Le (b. 1957, Taipei) earned his master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and specializes in ink painting, calligraphy, and seal carving. He has taught at institutions including Taichung Normal College (now National Taichung University of Education) and National Taiwan Normal University, and currently serves as a chair professor at Feng Chia University. Cheng has also been a juror for numerous art competitions, such as the National Art Exhibition, Dadun Fine Arts Exhibition, Taoyuan City Fine Arts Exhibition, and New Taipei City Fine Arts Exhibition, and has held many solo and group exhibitions.
Cheng’s work brings a fresh perspective to contemporary ink painting in both composition and subject matter. In Twilight City, he first presses ink onto the paper using a cloth to create textured impressions, then applies washes with a flat brush, and finally delineates window frames and rooftops to portray the contours of a modern city. The urban landscape is distilled into intersecting geometric lines and areas of ink wash, transforming concrete scenery into an abstracted image infused with the artist’s distinctive style. The work demonstrates the unique expressive potential of brush and ink within the evolving language of contemporary painting.
