Lin Pi-Chiang (b. 1973, Gukeng, Yunlin) graduated from National Taichung University of Education (formerly National Taichung Teachers College) and later earned his master’s degree in visual arts from National Chiayi University. A student of the renowned nihonga artist Chien Chin-Ching (1955-), Lin has taught for many years and is known for his mastery of traditional mineral-pigment painting. His works often depict natural landscapes and have received honors from the Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition, Provincial Art Exhibition, and Taiyang Art Exhibition. He is the former president of the Gelatin Color Painting Association and an active member of the Taiwan Nihonga Society, Taiyang Fine Arts Association, and Central Taiwan Fine Arts Association.
Cascading Waterfall: Autumn Harmony is part of Lin’s Cascading Waterfall series. Painted in a horizontal format, it captures an autumnal forest and a powerful waterfall tumbling down a mountain slope. On the left, richly layered autumn trees display a variety of textures and hues; on the right, a torrent of white water plunges with dynamic force. The work is rendered with natural mineral pigments, which Lin uses to convey the shimmering movement of water. Mist rising from the falls is built up through repeated washes and carefully refined using an airbrush. The layered forest, too, is created through cycles of painting and burnishing, resulting in a visually intricate and atmospheric portrayal of the season.
