Wang Shou-Ying (b. 1934, Lukang, Changhua) was graduated from the Taipei Normal School (now National Taipei University of Education) with a degree in art. Her work has received awards at the Provincial Teachers’ Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Chung Hsing Cultural and Arts Award. She has been an active member of the Chinese Oil Painting Society and the Tai-Yang Art Association, and has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Taiwan and abroad.

This work features Wang Shou-ying's daughter as the central figure, depicting the end of summer vacation as a new semester approaches. Wearing a new dress brought by her grandmother, the girl stands bashfully among the flowers. Rendered in warm tones of brown, red, and ochre, with touches of black, blue, and green, the composition is grounded by the brightness of the girl’s dress, evoking the heat and mood of summer. Wang’s use of layering and dry brush techniques creates a hazy, dreamlike quality that expresses a distinct memory of the season. This work won first prize in the Western Painting Division at the 27th Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition.
