Liao Ta-Sheng (b. 1939, Qingshui, Taichung) studied at Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education), where he trained under nihonga master Lin Chih-Chu (1917-2008). Liao spent many years as a teacher in elementary and junior high schools and developed a distinctive style in nihonga painting. His works have been selected and awarded in numerous provincial art exhibitions, including the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition, Central Taiwan Art Exhibition, and Provincial Teachers’ Art Exhibition. He has been active in various art associations, including the Central Taiwan Art Association, Niu-Ma-Tou Painting Society, Taiwan Nihonga Association, Taichung County Art Association, Taipei Green Water Nihonga Society, and the Huludun Fine Arts Research Society.
His work Autumn by the Lake features a tranquil lake-and-hill landscape rendered in the soft pigments of nihonga. The upper half of the painting presents overlapping, rounded hills formed by clusters of stylized triangular trees, giving the scene a rustic and playful tone. Below, a mirror-like lake reflects the shoreline shrubs and silvergrass with subtle clarity.
The overall composition is imbued with the warm hues of autumn, dominated by orange-yellow tones. As the viewer’s perspective moves across the scene, the colors shift gradually through yellows, greens, and browns, creating both depth and visual variety. The vivid red bushes and white silvergrass near the lake’s edge add a lively accent to the otherwise peaceful setting, evoking a sense of warmth and gentle energy characteristic of a calm autumn day.
