1961

Length:16.8 x Width:21.2 x Height:33.9 (cm)

Chang Hsi-Ching (1909-2000, Nantou) was graduated from Taichung Normal School (now National Taichung University of Education). He taught at Taichung Public School, the affiliated elementary school of Taichung Normal, and Taichung Normal School itself, nurturing generations of students. A pioneer of central Taiwan’s art scene, Chang was skilled in watercolor, pastel, calligraphy, and sculpture. His works were recognized by the Taichung Prefecture Art Exhibition, the Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition, and the Provincial Teachers’ Art Exhibition. He also co-founded influential artist groups such as the Central Taiwan Fine Arts Association and the Southeast Fine Arts Association.
Loving Mother is a sculptural portrait of Chang’s mother-in-law, whom he admired for her warmth, liveliness, and respected role in the family. To faithfully capture her likeness, Chang spent a long time preparing for this piece, taking photographs from various angles before beginning the slow, careful sculpting process. The figure is rendered with simplicity: a modest headscarf, gently pursed lips, and a serene, kind expression. Wrinkles etched across her face speak to a life of experience and grace, embodying the traditional virtues of Taiwanese womanhood—humble, dignified, and strong. This piece was awarded First Prize at the Provincial Teachers’ Art Exhibition and received the Education Association Award at the Taiyang Art Exhibition.
