The third generation Tokuda Yasokichi (1933-2009) was a renowned potter of the famous "Kutani ware" kiln site in Japan. In 1988 he took over the name of his father, the second generation Tokuda Yasokichi, and in 1991 he won the grand prize at the 11th Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. In 1997, he was recognized as a "Living National Treasure" by the Japanese government as the custodian of the "Colored Glaze Porcelain" technique.

Kutani ware is one of Japan's traditional ceramics, mainly produced in the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture in areas such as Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga and Nomi, and is best known for its colorful porcelain. The term "Kutani" is named after the village of Kutani, where the clay was obtained, and the production of Kutani ware began in the mid-17th century. Local lords discovered excellent clay here and introduced technology from the Arita region to begin ceramic production. Although the production of Kutani ware was once interrupted, it was resumed in the 19th century, known as the "revival period," and has continued to this day. Early Kutani ware, known as "Old Kutani," is famous for its diverse and vibrant colors, especially blue, green, and yellow, a characteristic that continues to this day. After the Meiji Restoration, Kutani ware adopted Western techniques, introducing the technology of removing plaster molds and establishing training schools to cultivate ceramic talent.

The third generation potter, Tokuda Yasokichi is known for his superior glaze mixing technique, especially his bright indigo blue glaze color. Unlike traditional Kutani ware, which is painted with designs on the body before being colored, his works are inspired by abstract painting, created solely with glaze coloring, emphasizing the beauty of the glaze itself without a predetermined shape. The body shows a color gradient from indigo blue to earthy yellow, with symmetrical reflections above and below. Although the glaze is mixed, there is no cloudiness, creating a bold and elegant color effect, with a modern, fascinating appearance, showing the author's excellent production skills.
