Chen Zi-He (1910-1984), also known as Fuzhai, was a native of Shunde County, Guangdong Province, and a renowned calligrapher and painter in Taiwan. Born into a literary family, he joined a poetry society and began studying literature at the age of twelve. The following year, he studied various calligraphic styles, developing a special affection for the works of Mi Fu, and also showed a talent for painting. After graduating from Guangzhou University, he held various positions, including director of education, secretary general, and county mayor in Yunfu, Sanshui, Taishan, and Maoming counties in Guangdong, as well as commander of the Gaozhou security forces. In his early years, introduced by Chen Shu-Ren, he joined the "Qingyou Group" founded by Gao Jian-Fu and other artists. Under the guidance of Lingnan painters, his artistic skills flourished. He went to Taiwan in 1949 and served as a thesis supervisor at National Chengchi University, executive director and secretary general of the China Painting and Calligraphy Evaluation Association, and chairman of the art committee of the China-US Economic Association. He also taught in university art departments, specializing in calligraphy and painting. He was the president of Yi Tan magazine and the editor-in-chief of Yi Tan monthly magazine. He also founded the "Huayang Art Garden", together with painters such as Wang Zhuang-Wei, Gao Yi-Hong, Zhang Long-Yan and Chen Ding-Shan, to form the "China Art Garden", dedicated to promoting and perpetuating aesthetic education and traditional calligraphy and painting.

In addition to his official duties in Taiwan, Chen Zi-He continuously indulged in poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He also devoted himself to the appreciation and study of calligraphy and painting, amassing a substantial collection of notable works from the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods. This endeavor greatly enhanced his insight and artistic perception. He frequently collaborated with artists such as Chang Da-Chien, Huang Jun-Bi, Ye Gong-Chao, and Zhao Shao'ang, further honing his skills and earning the collective title of "Three Masters of Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting in Lingnan" along with Ye Gong-Chao and Huang Jun-Bi. His paintings, especially of pine, cypress, plum, chrysanthemum, and banana trees, are exceptionally distinctive. Although he occasionally painted freehand landscapes, he was most famous for his depictions of pine and cypress trees. By incorporating calligraphy into his paintings, he fused the literati painting style of the Song and Yuan dynasties, achieving an artistic realm characterized by uninhibited and effortless elegance.
